About Makaton

Makaton is a language programme that uses speech, signs and symbols for people living with a learning or communication disability. 

Speech always accompanies the signs in Makaton, along with facial expression, body language and gesture.

Groups of people who can benefit from using Makaton include:

  • Children and adults on the autistic continuum
  • Children and adults with Down Syndrome
  • Children and adults with cleft lip and palate
  • Children and adults living with profound, severe, moderate or mild learning and communication difficulties
  • Children and adults living with dual disabilities, for example: learning difficulties plus physical impairments or sensory impairments (such as visual, hearing or processing impairments) 
  • People with an acquired brain injury
  • People with an acquired communication problem, such as dementia or following a stroke
  • Children and adults who may have problems learning to read
